Before I get into this I just want to say that I do not consider myself exclusively a nature and landscape photographer. I enjoy many different types of outdoor photography and even other types of art but there is certainly something special about being in the peace and quiet of nature and being able to capture just a moment of that to keep forever. I Hope you enjoy this bit of my story.
No, I didn’t just wake up one day and say “I wanna be a nature photographer”. It was a gradual process that involved the love of nature, technology and adventure.
First came the love of nature

As a child I spent much of my time watching nature documentaries. In fact this obsession with documentaries and nature has followed me to adulthood. A genuine curiosity about a variety of subjects began with my viewership of documentaries about the natural world.
When I graduated college I decided that the 9-5 wasn’t for me. I became independent and began chasing my passions rather than a paycheck. Though this has been tough at times it has been immensely rewarding. I have learned the finer points of multiple art forms and met people that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I have also had the privilege of spending more time doing the things I love. It is the sort of growth I cannot put a price on.
So, naturally, when I bought my first DSLR I began to rediscover that love of nature which I had acquired in my childhood watching documentaries. It was mostly out of utility at first, I needed something to take pictures of and beautiful landscapes are all around. This gave me a chance to practice with this technology and hone my craft.
In this pursuit to become a better photographer I found myself slowing down and appreciating details that I wouldn’t have even noticed before picking up a high quality camera. It may sound a little dramatic but becoming a photographer has brought me back to a love discovered in my childhood for nature.
Second is a love for technology

Love of nature by itself isn’t really enough to be a good nature and landscape photographer. There also needs to be a genuine appreciation for the technology that is used to capture scenes in all their glory. Fortunately, I have that too.
Even the most basic of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are capable of some pretty amazing things. Combine the camera with the right accessories and the possibilities are almost limitless.
This is where the appreciation for the tech side of photography becomes important. The amount of creative potential can be overwhelming to even an experienced artist. This is why a love of technology is important in my ongoing journey. To be the best photographer I can be means continuing to take the necessary time to understand the camera technology I use. This technological aspect of photography is something that I thoroughly enjoy. I sometimes think about the options of these devices and am both excited and amazed by the creative potential.
Third is a love for adventure

I mean who doesn’t love to travel? There’s a big beautiful world out there full of sights, sounds and experiences. Though I find myself preferring to stay home at times I do enjoy day trips to scenic places which I regularly post about on my website(mlcphotography.org) and instagram(@mlcphotography12).
There’s a satisfaction in seeking out places that are not widely known and capturing them in all their glory. The adventure side of landscape photography is what drives me to continue the work that I am doing. Heck it’s probably the biggest “why” of my journey to becoming a landscape photographer. I love the places that I venture off to so much that I decided it was time to pick up a camera. I won’t be around forever but the images created on my adventures will.
My hope for what I am creating is to pass this deep appreciation for nature and adventure on to others. I am far from finished in my efforts to see and capture the most amazing images that I can. It is a huge world and there is so much yet to be photographed and documented.
